I find “Creepy” characters, and character art very interesting, and many other people do too, but what exactly makes a character creepy? Well, in this blog/article I will give my opinion on this topic backed by quite a bit of research.

The obvious shit

8-foot-tall, hideously ugly creation, with translucent yellowish skin pulled so taut over the body that it “barely disguised the workings of the arteries and muscles underneath,” watery, glowing eyes, flowing black hair, black lips, and prominent white teeth.

This is how Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein describes Frankenstein's monster. And it’s pretty obvious that if a grown human were to encounter such a being, they would shit themselves twice over. The same would happen if something with long sharp teeth, blood-red eyes, a blood-thirsty expression, or a chainsaw were to grace you with their presence. But if we just pull ourselves away from the “mainstream” scary stuff, we might just get something much scarier…

The unknown

The oldest and strongest emotion of humankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
-H.P Lovecraft

This is a quote by the legendary horror author, H.P Lovecraft. A character doesn’t have to be paranormal looking to make a grown person faint. This is why characters with masks, goggles, etc. Are kinda scary like the plague doctor. And this happens for the same reasons as being scared of the dark, you don’t know what there is lying right in front of you, you may even know, but there is always this unsettling feeling nagging you about the different possibilities, especially the scary ones.

Personality

Creepiness is not always about the looks or size, it also has a lot to do with how the character behaves and acts. I would personally be way more scared of a demented psychopath than a person with a few scars on her face. Personality can be scary in a lot of different ways, maybe they have some trigger words that make them go mad or a mental disorder that makes killing people like drugs to them, it doesn’t matter, but to complete a creepy character, their personality is extremely important, and I cannot stress this point harder
